Shepherd's Pie

Shepherd's Pie is known as an English meat pie. It consists of two layer, the meat layer at the bottom and the mashed potato layer on top. The meat filling could be varied, but the combination of beef, carrots and peas is very common.

Shepherd's Pie

Serve : 6

You need :
a baking dish (with minimum 3.5 L volume)
a potato masher

Ingredients :
Filling :
750 gr ground beef
300 gr carrots, peel and dice
200 gr peas
4 tbsp olive oil
1 onion, peel and mince
2 garlic, peel and mince
2 bay leaves
2 tbsp tomato ketchup
2 tbsp Wochestershire sauce
1 tsp chopped parsley (or dried parsley)
salt and pepper

Mashed Potato :
1.5 kg potatoes
3 tbsp butter
1 tsp ground nut meg
1 tbsp sweetened condensed milk (optional)
salt and pepper

Extra :
150 gr grated cheddar cheese

Steps :
For the filling. Add in olive oil into a pan over medium high heat. Add in onion, garlic, bay leave and carrots. Fry them for about 1 minute. Add in ground beef, stir them for few minutes then add in tomato ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Continue cooking until the beef almost fully cooked. Add in peas then cook for another 2 minutes. Turn off the heat. Transfer into the baking dish and spread over the surface.

For the mashed potato. Boil potatoes in salted water until tender. Drain into a mixing bowl. Add in butter, condensed milk, salt and pepper. Mash and mix them immediately until smooth. Spread the mashed potato over the filling evenly. Sprinkle grated cheddar cheese over the mashed potato. Bake for about 30 minutes until the cheese melts and becomes golden brown. Turn off the oven. Serve.
