Tahu & Tempe Bacem (Spiced Fried Tofu & Tempe)

Tofu and tempe are good friends, they are always together, like salt and pepper or oil and vinegar 😉

Tofu and tempe (sometimes it's written as "tempeh") are two favorite vegan protein sources in Indonesia and have become very popular in Europe because they are very suitable for vegetarians. They can be found in most of Asian market in Europe and are usually made in Holland.

I used to be a "cook tutor" for a vegetarian German family. They buy tempe very often but didn't know how to cook it. I taught them to make this dish and they were very happy. So this isn't just fried tofu and tempe, they would be marinated first and then fried. So they are rich in flavor.

Tahu & Tempe Bacem (Spiced Fried Tofu & Tempe)

Serve : 6

You need :
a food processor

Ingredients :
400 gr tofu, cut into pieces
400 gr tempe, slice into 0.75 cm thick
3 bay leaves
frying oil

Spices paste :
100 gr shallots, peel
3 cloves garlic, peel
6 candle nuts
3 tbsp cooking oil
1 tbsp Javanese sugar or palm sugar
1 tsp ground coriander
1 tsp ground galangal

Steps :
For the spices paste. Blend all ingredients in a food processor with high speed until smooth. Set aside.

Into a pan over medium heat, add in the spice paste and bay leaves. Saute them for a while until fragrance. Add in tofu and tempe pieces. Stir carefully until the paste coats tofu and tempe. Turn off the heat. Let them marinated for hours.

Prepare a frying pan over high heat, pour in frying oil. Deep fry marinated tofu and tempe until golden brown. Drain on paper towel to remove excess oil.

Serve with bird's eye chilies, steamed white rice, and another Indonesian dishes like Ayam Goreng Serundeng (Fried Chicken with Spiced Grated Coconut), Ayam Bakar Kecap (Sweet Soy Sauce Grilled Chicken), Ikan Acar Kuning (Fried Fish with Yellow Pickle), etc.
